First of all I'd like again to thank Nate for the wonderful job he does and has done yet again for transferring the run from Video Tape. Also I would like to thank Jason Wood "Woody" as he gave me a lot of support which pushed me further towards optimizing this run. Finally thanks of course to the man who needs no introduction, Radix.
While running MGS games I prefer to run through areas with guards in them, as opposed to Boss Fights, in terms of ease and speed. You will find that running through areas is when I am at my best and gain the most amount of time. Though the Boss Fights in this particular run are also flawlessly quick.
I feel most parts of this run are perfect; there are some parts where I really get into MGS and quite literally fly through scenes with maximum speed. During most of the game I use the DPM camouflage which is available only on the European version. Although this suit offers good camouflage in some areas I can achieve the same camouflage count in most areas with a combination of Tiger Stripe and Woodland Face Paint. I adopt one technique from my MGS2 run which is the shoot and roll method. This works wonders in the game as it means that I don't ever have to stop moving. I also am seen always using the manual reload technique (R2, R2). I use this at pretty much every part of the game and this has become second nature. It does really help during the fight with most bosses. There is also another technique which I used but which wasn't really clear. This was the punch-punch-kick cancel technique. (It helped in catching the Mouse!) This is simple done by doing the punch-punch- kick combination but pressing R2 at any time to equip Snake with a weapon thus cancelling his punch-punch-kick during the animation. This is especially effective if timed right as soon as Snake kicks, then you can start the punch again very quickly, and repeat. I do this a few other times during the run.
At the start of the Snake Eater operation I am seen wildly shooting the M119A1. This is because I thought I needed an empty magazine clip, which I didn't. I'm happy with the routes I use in high alert situations, for example the Ocelot Unit fight in Rassvet was very good (I don't like hiding under beds!). The first 3 segments were flawless in my opinion expect for one huuuge mistake, involving an electric fence, hey I am human after all. The mountain is also very quick and there are no mistakes. My fight with The Fury was very speedy and the Groznyj Grad run in general was perfect. However after this you do see both the best and worst of me. The first two scenes during the motorcycle escape with Eva are really poor and I hardly shoot any of the guards. However after the first two scenes I do really pick my game up and get some seriously good shots on the bikers. The Fight against the Shagohod is also exceptionally quick, and I deal with Volgin quick enough too.
Also note at the start of the sixth segment I use a strange glitch in the game I dubbed the "Magic Box". After arriving back into Groznyj Grad I use the Box to run right in front of guards, but for some reason they fail to see me. Definitely worth a second look!
My favourite area in terms of speed running is Ponizovje Warehouse. During the run I come through this area twice, and think its very good how quickly I deal with 4 guards in a room with such limited space and a camo count of -20% or so. I try not to stop during any scenes unless it's absolutely necessary, I feel that the routes I take based on my camouflage count are the best possible routes. If anyone feels that some parts could've been improved even by a couple of seconds please do let me know.
Overall I am delighted with the run; and feel that I would struggle to knock off any time. I don't plan on doing this again. But will soon do a Single Segment Foxhound run (that's where I needed the clip!).
